It’s been a very mild winter on the CT shore, and now there’s been a week of 70 degree days. But it still seems like an act of faith – these blossoms showing up for the first day of Spring.

The Essex Garden Club hosts an annual “May Market”, and a few years ago, I went looking for perennials that might be especially interesting to photograph.  One of the club members steered me to some anemone roots, and they definitely fit the bill.  That first year, they bloomed through the autumn into November.   This year, however, rabbits cleaned them out, and rightfully so, given my procrastination with laying in the protective netting.

What started as a one acre planting of sunflowers in 2003 is now up to 14 acres and 300,000 plants in 2011.  You can take home a sunflower bouquet for a $5 donation to the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Connecticut, which receives 100% of the proceeds.  There’s an old world feel to be had wandering around the fields.

Guardian lions were believed to have substantial protective powers and traditionally stood in front of Chinese palaces, government buildings and the homes of the wealthy, dating back 2000 years.  They were placed in pairs, a male with a paw on a globe, representing the world, and a female with a paw on a lion cub (the cycle of life).   They’ve changed some over the years, and across cultures.

A quick visit to a perennial flower garden with camera,  tripod and a good macro lens can easily turn into an hourlong reverie.  On this early evening,  hummingbirds were visiting.
