A cool wind blowing in from the northwest, the midday play of light in the forest and the hypnotic sound of the rushing water: it was easy to spend the greater part of an hour here, all the while on the lookout for an “essence of stream” photograph. This was the one I liked the best, which coincidentally was the view that prompted the stop to begin with.

This man was on a cigarette break from his job at a local restaurant as I happened to be walking by. He told me of a family gathering at a nearby inn and encouraged a visit with his photographer son who was there. I did so as it was on my way, and met his wonderful extended family – slowly coming around from a night of celebration – and took a few more portraits. (Names lost in the Great Hard Drive Crash of 2009.)

We moved to our home here in Ivoryton when it was 5 years old, in 1992. The landscaping on the property was minimal – some lawn and shrubs that barely made a dent in the forest around us. That changed over the years, and it was especially rewarding to bring in scented shrubs: honeysuckle, mock orange, roses, and a few viburnum. Spring is truly here when those viburnums blossom, and it’s always worth a trip to the “back forty” for the wonderful vanilla fragrance, and the way it shifts, ever so slightly, with the weather and time of day.
